How To Prepare Your New Dog For Hazardous Weather

Enjoy a guest post by Paige Johnson on preparing your dog for hazardous weather.

Dog Hazard PreparednessWhen you are a first-time dog owner, odds are you haven’t had the time to consider everything your pup is going to need. Extreme weather is alarming for people, let alone a dog. As your new dog’s guardian, it is your job to keep him safe and calm. Many dogs become nervous around unfamiliar weather and may end up endangering themselves. There are a few ways you can prepare your dog for hazardous weather.

Know the Breed

Each breed of dog has different levels of resiliency to heat, dampness, and cold. Even if your dog is a mixed breed, you should make yourself aware of your dog’s tolerances. If you have a small dog, particularly a Chihuahua, your dog may be susceptible to all weather and will require protection from heat, cold, and dampness.

You also should learn your dog’s specific preferences. Some dogs are indifferent to thunder, while others panic as soon as they hear the first rumble. You need to prepare to handle both your dog’s mental wellbeing and physical wellbeing during a thunderstorm.

Buy Supplies in Advance

It can be difficult to predict what your dog will need during times of severe weather. However, you should do your best to be well prepared. Some recommended precautions include rain jackets, waterproof boots, paw protectors, first aid kits, winter coats or vests, and a Thundershirt if your dog is fearful of severe conditions.

When the weather heats up, you must consider your dog’s paw pads when taking him onto concrete, macadam, or stone. If you can’t handle walking barefoot on the sidewalk or street, it’s too hot for your dog. This is when pad protectors come into play. Some dogs also are prone to sunburn. On the other hand, when the weather turns cold, your dog will need boots and a garment to keep his core warm. For smaller dogs, you may need to invest in a full snow suit to protect their delicate body temperatures.

Keep Up With Training

A poorly trained dog is far more likely to bolt when alarming weather occurs. This puts him in danger and you at risk of never finding your beloved pet again. Make sure your dog obeys your commands regardless of circumstances and can be recalled if he is running away from you. You might want to consider professional dog training courses if you aren’t having success.

Have a Plan

For emergency situations such as flooding or tornadoes, you should have a plan in place that includes your pet’s needs. Including your pet in emergency response practices can be a part of his training. If he knows what to expect in the event of an emergency, he is more likely to remain calm. For example, in case your neighborhood is hit by a big storm, you should teach your dog a command that means he should hunker down in safe shelter and wait for you to tell him it’s safe to leave. Of course, you’ll also need to teach him the safest place to go under these circumstances.

Preparing your family for any extreme weather is stressful enough. Bringing a new dog into the mix can make things even more difficult, as you may not know how best to cope with your dog’s needs. The primary focus is keeping him mentally and physically safe from the weather with supplies and training.

Consult with a dog trainer and visit a quality pet store so that you can rest assured that your pet will be safe no matter what Mother Nature sends your way.

Beneful Dog Food Recall Yes or No

Beneful Dog Food Recall Yes or No?

More Please...

The dog world is rocked with dog food questions these days. What is good, what is bad?  What is the truth, what is not.  The latest controversy is a Beneful Dog Food recall that hasn’t happened.  A Purina product.

Yep, one of the big store name brands that puts pretty pictures of real food on the front of the bag.  The marketing is done nicely.  Fresh carrots and peas, chunks of premium red meat imprint on the mind.  The photos let us believe in our hearts this is what we are feeding our beloved dogs.

After all.  Its an oldie goldie trusted name, right?

But Beneful Dog Food is Not on the FDA Dog Food Recall List

Should I be concerned?

Recently the Consumer Affairs website has been inundated with over 250 complaints about Beneful Dog Food causing illness, even to the point of liver failure on their website.  I think these complaints are going to be far from over unfortunately.  It’s quite a political arena as it turns out, sort of like the fight over listing GMO’s!

*you can see more complaints about Beneful Dog Food at Dogstar.com

An Examiner article titled Beneful dog food killing dogs nationwide; no recall issued by FDA has become quite popular and in fact has also taken criticism for reporting something before it is actually proven to be true.

Yet, the truth of the matter is there have been chicken jerky dog treats on the market that have also been making hundreds and thousands of dogs sick, some to the point of death, but have not been placed on the FDA recall list.

The FDA Criteria

Finally, after over a year of people reporting sick and dying dogs over the chicken jerky treats coming out of China, the FDA listed Milo’s Kitchen® Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers after the company voluntarily recalled the product due to finding trace amounts of antibiotics in them.

What??? Not only are there all kinds of chemicals and diseased products being added to our dogs’ food, but we are feeding them a little bit of antibiotics every time we give them a treat?  Sound like something you want to sign up for?

I don’t know about you, but I’d certainly believe the number of complaints and problems listed on the Consumer Affairs website to have some serious validity to them before I’d wait until the FDA decided to issue a warning!

So why isn’t the FDA recalling Beneful?  There could be several possibilites.

It could be every single complaint on the Consumer Affairs website are legitimate reports of pet death or illness linked to Beneful, but only a few of these pet food adverse events were reported to FDA.

You can read more on reasons why the FDA doesn’t seem to get on these things in a timely fashion at Information Regarding Beneful Complaints

What Dog Food Should You Feed Your Dog

That’s the big question.  And there are many opinions about it.  Personally, I have a problem with an all processed diet.  However, not even I have time to cook for my dogs every single day.  As well, feeding your dog a home made dog food diet does require some knowledge.  They need certain vitamins and minerals.

It’s not that hard really though.  Once you have a few rules down, get a few good dog food cookbooks and find good quality ingredients kibble to feed on those days you can’t do it all, you’ll have a happier healthier dog (and you too most likely…  back to the old fashioned you are what you eat methodology).

TEDxMaui and Dogs

TEDxMauiLogoTEDxMaui 2013 and Dogs

Many of you are familiar with Ted Talks.  They are inspiring and have been best described as “brain spas”. But what does TEDxMaui and dogs have to do with one another?

Life on Maui with Dogs

I did not attend last year’s TEDxMaui because I did not live here.  I moved to Maui from the Big Island Hawaii in August 2012.  Since making that decision I found the true Aloha of Hawaii here on Maui.  And yes, that does include dogs as well.

I get the opportunity to start all over again on this island of Maui and in doing so I’ve put more meaning, more purpose, more joy into what I do with dogs over the last 14 years.  Ultimately for me, that means I inspire people to understand how dogs think and learn and develop a relationship of understanding and joy versus miscommunication, frustration and love/hate relationships.

I get to inspire people to realize that we truly do become what we think about and are an amalgamation of the 5 people (including dogs) we spend the most time with.

I  get to inspire people to get out and have fun and enjoy the small things each and every day we have on Maui with our dogs.  I get to show people how dogs can truly forgive quickly, get excited about the same old tennis ball, or a beach walk.

Getting excited like it was the greatest day ever more often brings sparks of inspiration to live with purpose with what we already have right in front of us.

And I have found that when joy and passion start to fire up, great things happen.

Lollipop Moments & Treats

We tend to offer our dogs treats when they’ve done something good.

We tend to offer them treats when we want them to feel happy about themselves, and in doing so we feel happy ourselves.

We give them treats because it lights our own eyes up as a reflection of our dog’s eyes to see the combination of gratitude and satisfaction from knowing they did something right to the definite feeling that we are pleased about it.

Why is it that we don’t do that for the people around us?

Why don’t we tell people how happy we are when we see them attempt to do something new? Why don’t we acknowledge how important small steps to a better place?

Have you ever had someone say something or do something that fundamentally made your life better?  Have you ever told that person they did it?  i.e. it’s a big treat!!

*Ted Talk shown at TEDXMauiSalon as we discussed this year’s 20 speakers here on Maui

TEDxMaui 2013

I had the pleasure of attending a TEDxMauiSalon and the short evening was so inspiring to me I was amazed.  Many people I have met on this wonderful Island were there and every one of them had the words that TEDxMaui 2012 changed their lives.

I cannot wait.  I’m imagining great things for myself and everyone else at TEDxMaui 2013.

And by the way, after that short salon TEDx session, I was invited to New York City as the fitness/behavior trainer in the DogTread Canine Gym at this year’s Westminster Dog Show!

After “The Dream is Real” …. well, keep checking back.  You’ll see!

Healing Through Dogs

Some people look at it as dog behavior that drives them crazy.  Some people look at it like the dog needs some training.  Some people look at it like why can’t I just have a good dog that can go everywhere with me instead of this dog that I have to watch out for bad behavior all the time?

Dog Training with Maui Aloha | Healing

I call it time to start understanding how to heal your feelings and your needs by learning a better way to communicate.  Dogs are the very best place to start that kind of healing.  They really don’t judge,  they don’t really expect, they just are there to live with you, in the moment, whatever you are going through.

And sometimes what you are going through is the fact that you aren’t communicating with yourself, and therefore you aren’t communicating with anyone else really including your dog, and it makes you irritated.  It makes you feel on edge.  It makes you have anxiety.  Sometimes even what might be a full on anxiety attack takes over in what should have been a real simple thing to get through.  Something you actually do every day, but still every single day you get this feeling.

Anxiety or Stress Imagine What It Must Be Like to Be a Dog Who Can’t Explain It

If you know what I’m describing then imagine those same feelings and reactions to those feelings in your dog.

And now do you see why this thing that could be called fear aggression or separation anxiety or unexplained outbursts is really about not knowing how to communicate?  It is about not knowing how to fulfill needs due to assumptions.

Is it bad dog behavior or is it learning how to communicate and understand?   Is it the dog just needs some training or is it that we need someone to hear us too, and when we are listened to the joyfear life turns to the joyful life.

The dog who is living the joyfear life can also quickly learn to live the joyful life.

If you have questions or want help with your dog I am here.

Maui Beach Dogs and Walking on Sunshine

What is your favorite thing to do with your dog on Maui?

There are so many things dogs can do on an island like Maui. This past weekend I went with a small group of two other dogs and their people on an outing.  A beach romp for the dogs, then off to a trail that led to the coolest blow holes by the ocean. Way cool stuff. And yes, we all were literally walking on sunshine.

Dogs Bring Out the Best In People

The fun part about it was the dogs and the fact that each of their people had spent enough time with their own dog that off leash recall was no problem. The dogs got to be dogs while maintaining good behavior and the people got to do their thing too, which mostly revolved around how much fun the dogs were having! It got everybody out to play.

And we all need to PLAY MORE!

Off Leash Recall

So how to you get your dog to come back to you no matter what?

It really comes down to repetition…. and knowing how your dog thinks and learns.  Repetition means time spent doing it over and over again. How dogs think and learn…… well, that’s where I excel in working with people. It s a concept that slips by easily because we are such multi-taskers as people.

Stay with the task each and every time and recall will become automatic.  Don’t try to call your dog to you from too far away when you start getting serious about teaching a solid “come here” every single time.  Take the time to get your dog to come to you from 3-7 feet away from you over and over and over again, before you even try to use the concept for 10, 20 or 30 feet.

When one starts understanding the fact that dogs learn in pictures rather than logic a whole new world opens up.   The new and fun things make having a dog as part of your own family the best thing in the whole wide world every single day and practicing fundamentals becomes fun, not daunting.

Home Cooked Dog Food

The latest round of dog food recalls left many whirling about what to do as a good dog food choice, considering many premium dog foods were on that list.  Most dog owners have come to believe the only thing to feed their dog is kibble.

When one really stops to think about it, dog food recalls aside, feeding only kibble may not be the healthiest diet for dogs. We’ve learned through our own diets that processed food has gotten us to obesity, diabetes, thyroid problems and a host of other unhealthy situations.

Yet, the thought that we feed our dogs an all processed diet and wonder why diabetes, cancer and obesity are on the rise to the tune of nearly 50% of our dogs has seriously been overlooked.

Dogs Need Nourishment Too

Dog nutrition has been sold to us by the media for the last couple of decades as “balanced” through kibble. In fact it has been sold to us so hard that most people actually believe the essential vitamins and minerals dogs need can only be attained through kibble.

It is true that dogs do have vitamin and mineral requirements but surely with a bit of balance in real food the notion that they can’t get the right nutrition without eating kibble is a little crazy really. We have been sold the notion to the point we believe and our dogs are suffering over it.

Time to get a little education on what to feed your dog to get real nutrition. It’s time our dog’s get something healthier than the McDoggie diets they have been existing on, that have actually been detrimental to their long term health.

What Vitamins and Minerals Dogs Need

*vetinfo.com list these essentials

Vitamins

Vitamin A– for maintaining healthy hair, skin, eyes, muscles, nerves and ovaries.

Vitamin C– for maintaining a healthy urinary tract.

Vitamin B- complex– for maintaining normal growth and energy levels.

Vitamin D– for proper nerve and bone formation and muscle function.

Vitamin E– for proper cell respiration, fat metabolism and hormone production.

Vitamin K– for maintaining normal blood functions, like clotting.

Minerals

Calcium and phosphorous– for healthy bone growth, blood coagulation, muscle contraction, and nerve impulse transmission.

Copper–for proper formation of bone, tissue, and cells.

Fatty acids–for proper function of body organs and control of allergies and inflammation.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin– for maintenance of healthy joints.

Iodine– for proper metabolism and thyroid function.

Iron– for proper function of red blood cells which transport oxygen.

Magnesium– for proper vitamin, mineral and enzyme use, bone development, and protein production.

Potassium– for maintaining healthy muscles and nerves, and proper fluid balance.

Selenium– for protection of cells as an antioxidant.

Sodium and chloride– working separately or together, as sodium chloride, for proper fluid balance, transfer of nutrients, elimination of cell waste.

Zinc– for maintaining healthy hair and skin.

Vitamins and minerals are essential for good health and as the trend goes for whole food and juicing for people, it only makes sense that our dogs would be much better off absorbing their vitamins and minerals from real food as well.

Homemade dog food doesn’t have to be a difficult thing. In fact it can not only become quite easy but is pretty much guaranteed to spur you to a better diet for yourself.

Making the Switch to Real Food for Your Dog

If you want to make the switch to better food and better health for your dog do it just like you would any new change for yourself.

Gradually.  Studies prove you have a way higher rate of success with gradual change, like 2 or 3 good meals a week instead of none.  Don’t try to suddenly switch to all their meals are homemade. You are sure to fail and give up.

You don’t have to take on becoming a doggie gourmet cook overnight. Nor do you have to cook for your dog every single day.

Start by getting an education on the good nutrition for your dog and begin making a few recipes while adding to your knowledge about how to best get the right vitamins and minerals to your dog.

Learning to add the right things to your dog’s diet can come over time as well.  *Join My Inbox if you’d like to get easy super food and supplement ideas using the very ingredients you would use while cooking your own food.

Home made Dog Food Tip

Calcium is a much needed mineral in a dog’s diet. The first thing we people think of as a calcium additive is milk. But guess what? It’s certainly not the best way to get calcium and feeding your dog loads of milk is not a good idea. Find out more about why milk is not a good source of calcium here: Healthy Alter Ego Milk

Here are two answers to adding calcium to your dog’s diet.

• Parsley

• Eggshells

Give your dog coconut oil every day! You can find recipes with coconut oil in Pumpkin Dog Food + Treats Recipes

• Anti bacterial

• Anti parasitic

• Anti inflammatory

On Being Nice

“She was nice to me so I made something nice for her.”  ~Lucy Hanson

Oh the lessons we learn from children and dogs!  Hoku, a dog who came to my dog training retreat to work on some confidence spent a little time with my favorite little girl Lucy.  Lucy is only 5 years old but has the soul of a wise women.  Listen to her story about Hoku and apply it to who ever you are with today.

On Being Nice First ~ Just Like the Dog Wags Just Because

How many times has someone done something nice to you and you didn’t take the time to do something nice back?  Or how many times have you thought about doing something nice and that’s where it stopped.  You just thought about it.
This includes your dog’s ability to make you smile with the authentic joy of just seeing you come home, no matter what mood you arrive on the scene wearing.

Dogs give us great joy in their ability to except each day as it is and truly revel in moments of joy.  Take note and emulate the behavior. It will reward you greatly.

On Sharing with Others

Pay it forward.  As we receive blessings, of any kind, share those with others. That is the best “return on investment ” we can have.  Love and kindness are the biggest investment.  Do something good for someone, everyday, and the rewards will be much better than any interest rate on a bank account, and amazingly enough this will bring you the abundance you’ve desperately been trying to acquire.

Big Island Dog Beach Shack

This week at Big Island Dog Beach Shack at the Alii Gardens Marketplace Kailua, Kona Hawaii I’m offering a free dog food cooking class.  Our dogs are part of our family and their health and longevity become part of our own joy. *note sign up even if you aren’t in Hawaii, there will be video teaching true nourishment for dogs for you too!

For too long we’ve been excepting big dollar marketing in the dog world as absolute truth.  We’ve been told we MUST feed our dogs kibble because it contains the correct vitamins and minerals for a dog’s well being.  Never mind that there is no other nourishment in the processed food that many times comes from road kill, diseased animals and a whole lot of “meal” products from corn to we’re not sure what it is!  Even a premium dog food is processed, processed, processed and takes a toll over time on the liver.

Adding the right vitamins and minerals is really easy and real food is way more nourishing than any McDoggie kibble diet.

Sign up for my Dog Food Cooking Class and find out how to add things like calcium and omegas and coconut oil to your dog’s real food diet.

Do something nice for your dog since your dog is nice to you everyday!

Stop the itching, scratching, licking madness and increase the years your dog has with you.  Everyone will wag more!

*By the way, I’m VERY interested in your dog’s struggles with itching, scratching, licking, ear troubles, any of that.  Answer these three questions specific to your dog and I’ll send you information on how to best treat your dog using natural remedies.  Or tell me your story in the comments below!

Much Aloha to you and your dog.
